The Australian Pharmaceutical Formulary (APF) is an essential resource that provides information on the safe and effective use of medicines in Australia. It contains detailed information on what medicines are available, how they're used, their safety and risk profiles, their side effects and interactions with other medicines. It also includes guidelines for the management of certain diseases including asthma, diabetes mellitus type 2, depression - new cases or relapse/recurrence of mood disorder while taking antidepressants or antipsychotics. The APF is released each year to clinicians by the Medicine Australia website www.medicineaustralia. com.au and is available free of charge to APF members and subscribers. There are three versions of the Australian Pharmaceutical Formulary:

The APF 23 can be accessed online through the Medicine Australia website. The APF is written and produced by a multidisciplinary team of general practitioners, specialist medical practitioners and pharmacists, with guidance from an expert Advisory Committee. It aims to deliver comprehensive information for clinicians on medicines use in Australian clinical practice. It provides practical information on prescribing, dispensing and administration (how to give medicines), as well as comprehensive listings of current medicines to assist clinicians in their prescribing decisions. APF 23 was adopted by the Medicine Australia Board in April 2012. It is the first new APF since 2001. The new Formulary has been written to meet the increasing need for reliable medication information and to ensure consistency of medicine use across Australia.

Part 1 contains guidelines for the safe and effective use of medicines. Part 1 also includes information on dispensing best practice, adult dosing regimens for common medications, a guide to abbreviations used in the Formulary, dosing tools for patients, dosing tools by body weight or age groups, dosing tools for patients with renal or hepatic impairment, dosing tables, Australian Poisons Standard numerical listings and more. Part 2 and 3 contain detailed information on medicines available in Australia and New Zealand. New medicines and new formulations of existing medicines, as well as those that have been withdrawn from the market, are not included unless there is no alternative similar medicine available. The APF 23 also contains a section on abbreviations including common drug names, special interest group abbreviations, prescribing body abbreviations, hospital pharmacy abbreviations and pharmacy-only abbreviations. The American Hospital Formulary Service (AHFS) is also included. AHFS definitions are commonly used in the US Pharmaceutical industry. They are not used in Australia or New Zealand for any regulatory purpose but are listed to assist with international trade of pharmaceutical products. Membership of Medicine Australia is free. All practising medical practitioners in Australia and New Zealand are eligible for membership. Membership includes complimentary APF access online. The APF can also be bought separately at a cost of $250 per year to full members or $500 per year to associate members. The APF is available electronically through the Medicine Australia website www.medicineaustralia.com.au . It can be accessed online using the username and password supplied by Medicine Australia with your membership pack, or alternatively you can contact Medicine Australia to request access to the APF if you are not a member .
